A customer was somewhat justifiably upset that I had drilled the fret dots wrong and just filled them with ebony. Let me calm your fears reso enthusiasts!
Underneath those ebony plugs are screws that go into the neck wedge (second picture). That keeps everything nice and attached. I use ebony plugs because I like keeping things subtle, and having six 1/4” dots up there is anything but.
And why do they start at the 13th? Since it’s closest to the side that area is the stiffest. Having the screws there keeps things tighter.
