When I had the idea for the “Mule Bus” in 2022 I told a couple friends about it and they, correctly, told me the same thing “This will not be an efficient way of showing people your guitars.”
Driving two, or five, or 20 hours to tailgate with 20, or five, or no people before a musician goes on a stage with a Mule has indeed been “inefficient”. But that’s kind of the point. There’s no subtext. If I’m sitting on a curb in a Philadelphia parking lot with two people, resonators, and beer it’s understood that this is not a good way of selling guitars. This leads to the question, “then.. why are you here?”
The first Mule Bus Stop was before an Ariel Posen show in Chicago. We were on the sidewalk outside Schuba’s. I pressured Nathaniel Murphy to eat the world’s hottest tortilla chip with me. In front of a bunch of people. The lactose free milk we brought did nothing. “Don’t rub your eyes!” As I rubbed my eyes.
And then a dozen of us went into the show as friends. We took a group picture. I see the same people every time I go to Chicago.
That’s why.
The full video of Ariel and I before his set at the Dallas Guitar Show is up on YouTube.
